This may just be the beginning. The article in Wired talks about "Data Hogs" and how ATT has been trying to get them to throttle back their usage. How, I don't know. I've been noticing more and more dropped calls on 3G as of late, so much that I have to disable it just to be able to make and complete a call.
Think about it for a second: if this were really an effort to reduce network traffic, it would be a piss-poor way of going about it. For one thing, denying the iPhone to new customers would be far less dependable than throttling data speed. For another, they're closing down only one of many distribution channels, meaning that people in NYC will still be able to get all the iPhones they want. Finally, this would be a public admission that their network is insufficient...and more fodder for the Verizon commercials. You can't tell me that that's not first in every AT&T; Wireless executive's mind right now.
I don't know what's going on -- everything is just speculation based on what some low-level AT&T; employees (probably new ones who couldn't get out of the holiday shift) said. And I'm not going to jump to any conclusions. I'm just saying that the Consumerist's interpretation doesn't make much sense.
But, if it was really about fraud in certain areas - wouldn't that mean that you can't purchase ANY phone from ATT online? Why would it only apply to the iPhone?

Pour all their R&D; into technologies that don't even exist yet, while continuing to throw up excuses for why they can't include technologies that do. Like Blu-Ray.
I recommend you listen to this interview (http://d8.allthingsd.com/20100607/steve-jobs-at-d8-the-full-uncut-interview/).
While this quote (http://www.ithinkdiff.com/steve-jobs-at-d8-videos-and-interview-transcript-9712/) doesn't specifically mention bluray, it seems like Apple is choosing not to "ride" Bluray into the future:
Apple has a history of doing that, Jobs says, noting that Apple was the first company to dump the floppy and later, to adopt USB. “Sometimes when we get rid of things, people call us crazy….But sometimes you just have to pick the things that are going to be the right horse to ride forward….And Flash has had it’s day…but HTML5 is starting emerge….The video looks better and it works better and you don’t need a plug-in to run it. And while 75 percent of the video on the Web may be available in Flash, a lot of it is available in HTML5 as well.”

if apple came out with an iPhone the size of the RAZR or smaller with the same capacity/functionality as an 8GB iPod nano, id buy it.
if it did all that AND had functionality like a pda, id sell my grandmother to buy it.
I agree. All I want is a thin form factor (flip or bar), and the ability to sync ical, itunes (including video) and iphoto.

You already have a standard for this, connecting any media device in a network.
There is no way to do what is being shown in this video with wifi or bluetooth. (Note that the toys do not have a power source.)

A co-worker and I called around and found three 16gb at a store. Went to get one apiece and luckily got the last two. They were reluctant to sell them to us for some reason though. :D

The lack of physical keyboard and the fact that is runs on a phone OS really makes the iPad useless for school purpose. I just can see anybody writing long essays on a screen (thumb input) keyboard. Having a real OS takes advantage of already developed software (and stable) and there are tons of them out there for every needs. Whereas an iPad software still needs to be developed. Other things like web research while writing notes can not be done on an iPad. All of these issues a laptop already solves and much more. Any new function an iPad have can easily be created on a laptop.
Frankly, an iPad is only good for is viewing media and even at that its pretty bad. Imagine holding an iPad upright to watch a two hour movie.

Before that we have the debt ceiling limit vote. If they don't vote to raise it, I shudder to think what will happen on the stock market.
ooo did not remember that one. safe to say that will will hit that limit this time as it will be yet another pissing match for the Tea Partiers.
Sad that GOP leadership is not willing to tell them to go pound sand on some issues.

They already do. I've been on Tmo with my iPhone for 3 years now.
Just unlock and go over. Or sit on your hands and wait for official.
I have been with Tmo for almost a year now with a 3GS and have unlimited everything and it works perfectly and much cheaper than ATT... Whats so funny is that Tmo has had a "iPhone" Tech help for 3 years gone now.....

I would hope that the unit would at least cache the download map tiles.
I wonder how well it will work on an iPad?

"Because he's a pervert, son. Stop staring at his screen and keep watching how the American hero slaughters evil terrorists with his machine gun on your TV screen."
Technically, people were able to watch porn on their notebooks during a flight, and so far this hasn't been an issue, has it?
I flew with Virgin Atlantic once, and they have a great entertainment system where you could watch porn if you wanted. But it says you have to ask a stewardess to enable it for you (enter a code)... Might be a bit embarassing asking "Can you put the password in so I can watch big boobies 4 please?" :p

So much whining, so little time.
About the only reason I'd care about anyone getting a discount is if I couldn't get the same discount myself.
Apple can charge what makes sense to them. As long as it's a decent business decision on their side, I have no gripe. If demand is high enough, they can get what they ask. If their institutional customers want to be "tossed a bone" to buy, then throw them a bone and make it up on volume.
Make some money Apple - and don't go broke in the process.
I like what Apple does enough to want Apple to stay healthy.
Nobody has to buy anything Apple sells if they don't want to. Nor can Apple make them.
Move on, people.

Just buy a Slingbox and watch any channel you want, anywhere you want.
Ditto! Slingbox rocks! And it's even more fun when you have a friend or two in other states that allow you to use their Slingbox to watch events that are blacked out in your own area. :)

You already use cards, which are trackable, stop whining, give us the option for ultra convenience, They'll still let you pay in cash if you choose!
You have the option to allow another to see/use your card, whereas RFID are wireless and do not give you the same protection.
