This use of 'real' materials in digitial software is something I really detest. It made me not like the ipad and nearly put me off the iphone.
Off the top of my head :
Ibooks - wood??????? looks turd
ical - as we have seen
Game center - fake felt table
All these interfaces are the worst thing about iosx .
It seems they are going to get worse !!!!!!! i bet it will be paper for mail next.
Thanks Apple. I am actually starting to like windows 7 and winphone7 as a more beautiful alternative, and I never thought I would say that.

Apple didn't necessarily want an exclusive carrier. That does nothing for Apple's business. AT&T; obviously paid for Apple's exclusivity.
So you're saying that AT&T; gives Apple money...but that does nothing for Apple's business?

I still don't get the value of wireless in a music player--not in actual practice (battery life and added bulk, vs. the need to plug in to charge, which naturally takes longer than synching anyway).
But whatever it is, I think its chances will depend a lot on whether it can be as slim and light as an iPod, and the same elegant ease-of-use as iTunes and iPod.
If it has those things, the X-Box name could carry it to some kind of success. But of course there can be more than one successful product in a market--Apple is not in danger.

Is there anything really innovative there? I don't think so. Yes, MacPro is an example of beautiful engineering, but there's not much innovation in there.
So what are you expecting? The computer industry hasn't been truly innovative since the first ICs were produced. I suppose you could claim the invention of the mouse was relatively innovative, but certainly not the addition of the keyboard - those had been used in typewriters for years! For the rest of it, all it is is binary mathematics - with short and long term storage - this was all stuff mathematicians had a handle on for millenia. Nothing innovative there right? The internet? Not really innovative, people had been connecting PCs together with serial and parallel cables for years before that. The internet did it better, but so what? To be truly innovative, you must come up with something that no one else has ever done, right?
In case you hadn't noticed, pretty much everything in the computer industry had been done before, or can be seen as an adaption of something else. So by your definition, there are no new ideas and therefore no innovation anywhere. Which leads me to ask, what innovative things are you looking for, that you feel you can criticize Apple for not being innovative enough?

HTC phones get updates & always have done. What is this HTC bloatware you are talking about? If you mean HTC Sense I'll laugh at you a lot. It's a brilliant add-on to Android. In fact, I couldn't imagine Android without it.
I think that's the case with a lot of phones in the UK, regarding updates. However, State side that's not true. HTC is the best at keeping most their phones up to date, but the carriers really put a strong hold on what one, and when. There are still some phones/carriers running 2.1, with no sign of 2.2 any time soon. Yet 2.3 is out.
I agree; of all the add ons for phones, sense is the best. Moto-Blur and Samsung [not sure what they call theirs?] are no where near as clean or responsive.

Poster wasn't stirring the pot. One person said "OMG Apple built OSX on top of Unix! They don't build ANYTHING original. Google on the other hand build Android." to which someone pointed out "Uh, no Google bought Android" and others pointed out that Android was built on top of Linux too.
Paraphrasing there.
OSX was built on UNIX. Just like Android is built in Linux.
I did make an off the cuff statement about ChromeOS. But my reasoning was that OSX is a little bit more than ChromeOS, so rolling it out and making it available is a little different.

Just placed my order. Saved $8 with education discount but shipping cost 6 cause it took the price below the free shipping limit. What to do with the 2 bucks I saved by being thrifty!
Now I will have 2 computers and 4 mouse's (1BT, 2 wired MT's and 1 BT MT). Lucky I have friends that will take my hand me downs. :)
Shipping in 6-8 weeks in Canada, I will have forgot I ordered it by the time it arrives.

Corporations are evil.
Apple is evil, so is samsung. Why anyone would have an emotional yearning for one company above another is beyond me, both companies would gladly take all your money for nothing if you let them.
Let them duke is out, neither is right.
There you go, making sense. That isn't tolerated around here. :D

Woohoo! About ****ing time Apple offered a decent GPU again. The last time the iMac had a GPU capable of playing modern games was 2007 with the 8800GS.
The 8800GS was actually the 8800M GTS, the second-highest model GPU in nVidia's mobile lineup at the time. The HD5750M in the previous iMac was actually a HD5850M or the second-highest model GPU in ATI's mobile lineup at that time. So Apple hasn't been skimping up to now on top-end options. Admittedly, the HD6970M is notable because it's actually the top-end mobile GPU, so we have climbed up a rung in the ladder.

Why do you keep comparing a single phone model to an entire platform used on 20 some devices?
Oh... that's right... it's all you can hang your hat on. Sorry... let's talk pummeled or badly beaten when any single Android phone outsells the iPhone.
FULL OF........ probably has 3 iphones and is waiting for ip5 to belittle it
as ip4. For those who do not know:
He is an Apple and MR addict and has this forum on auto refresh and stored
paste phrases.
APPLE IS (A)
going down,
embarrassing,
disgrace,
badly beaten,
weak on specs,
losing the battle
You can insert that as you like or add.
110 MILLION plus iphones sold and still selling strong (instead of buy one get one FREE) says it all .

You don't get it.
That's all you got?
What don't I get?
How I can get a 3GS for $50? Or how I can get a 3GS for $50 with a $10/month additional line? Please tell me how.
Or why paying 90% of the total cost for a 4 and only getting a 3GS is a good deal.

i hope it comes in white/black/aluminium (silver plastic?) variations.
I totally agree!
I want to see pro keyboard / mice combos (in silver / aluminium) - back light keyboard, thinner - matches the pro laptops and desktops. And then black / white versions for the consumer range. It would look professional to have a cinema display with my macbook pro and have a bluetooth keyboard & mighty mouse set that for once matched the design in terms of colour at least.

It's great that Apple seems to be taking GPUs more seriously in this refresh. The base iMac has the HD6750M which is the high-end GPU option for the MacBook Pro and a solid mid-range GPU rather than being stuck with integrated or low-end discrete GPUs. An the HD6970M is the top-end mobile GPU, rather than the second-to top that Apple usually uses. It's also nice that Apple actually admits they are using mobile GPUs now to avoid confusion.
It's too bad that Apple skimped on the RAM in the mid-range models which should have 1GB. The 2GB HD6970M option is nice though.

This is great but I do have a question..
Since it's bluetooth and Apple says it works within 30 ft.What happens if you're in a starbucks and other people have bluetooth turned on ?
Will they be able to "hack" your Mighty Mouse?

Good I'm not alone mate, I notice while the device is hooked to AC power you generally get better performance although games still result in 'pops'.
It seems to develop a few hours after you've setup apps. etc how you like, but just after a restore you'd forgive them for fixing it.
It's that fit and finish that I hate my device loosing for no good reason. They did add a new animation element when opening and closing apps in that the background now fades black, I'm guessing it's that addition that's causing these problems.
Ok, so I've installed Facebook, Sky Mobile TV, Sky+, Sky Sports Football Centre, and Sky Sports News apps. All of them no longer display the missing launch animation ... BUT.
They display a very quick and almost missable rendition of the launch animation. Again, once loaded into the memory, the full and proper animation works when you return to the home screen and relaunch the app.
As for general missing frames of animation during general navigation, I'll need to have an extended play around with the phone tonight to see what's happening on that score. During the day at work, my iPhone 4 is pretty much used non-stop for different tasks at different points in the day. Whether it's taking an important call, sending the wife a text telling her to watch the kids shoes lying at the top of the stairs, playing a game of Infinity Blade, or browsing these very forums and other tech site apps (Engadget, TUAW, Mashable, etc).
