Action man: Tom Cruise films a scene during night shoot on Mission Impossible IV in Prague

He is known as one of the hardest working people in the industry, and Tom Cruise proved it last night as he worked through a gruelling all-night shoot.

The superstar kept morale high on the set of Mission Impossible IV, laughing and joking with crew members in between takes.

He even had a laugh while filming his beloved action sequences, which saw him running through the streets of Prague.

While he was able to keep warm in a puffy jacket on breaks from filming, the actor was forced to brave the cold Czech Republic night, with Celcius temperatures dropping to single digits.

The 48-year-old appeared to grit his teeth as he removed his warm jacket and stood in only a T-shirt, which showed off his bulging muscles.

The actor donned a slightly warmer leather hooded jacket for his scene, with a pair of trousers which had fraying and holes, presumably a result of his action sequence.

Tom has been joined on set in recent days by co-stars including Lost star Josh Holloway and French actress Lea Seydoux, who were both seen filming earlier in the day.

The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner, who plays Cruise's character Ethan Hunt's number two in the film, has also made an appearance on the Prague set.

Rumours are circulating that producers are setting Renner's character up as a possible replacement for Cruise in future Mission instalments, although the mega-star is expected to reprise his Hunt role for the fifth movie.

Executives at Paramount Pictures were said to be reconsidering the fourth Mission Impossible film after his latest action project Knight and Day failed to set the US box office alight.

The action-comedy co-starring Cameron Diaz performed poorly in the U.S., but fared better overseas.

However, with filming of the hit franchise fully under way it seems they've reconsidered.

It's hard work: But he didn't look as happy when he had to remove his jacket to start filming in the chilly air

Despite nearing 50, the superstar is determined to hold on to his action hero persona, and continues to film all his own stunts.

'I want to entertain the audience and part of making these movies is doing my own stunts,' he explains. 'I love having the camera right there in front of me, where you can see me holding a shot all the way through.

'I think it adds to the excitement for an audience. It`s something that is challenging to do and fun for me.'

Despite disappointing in sales and being critically panned, most would agree that the action-packed stunts in Knight and Day were impressive, particularly a motorcycle sequence that Cruise says was his own idea.

While riding a speeding motorcycle, Diaz swings around to Cruise’s frontside, while shooting at a host of people that are in hot pursuit of the pair.

'I called [Director James Mangold] and I said, "Look, I’ve got this stunt. It’s this motorcycle stunt… We’ve gotta put a motorcycle in this scene and I’ve gotta flip her around this thing,"' Tom explained during an interview with Access Hollywood.

'I called Cameron and said, "Are you up for it?" She came out. We practised it and stuff and Jim shot it. I couldn’t wait to do that!'

Tom added that he knew Cameron would be up to the task.

'She’s strong enough. The great thing about Cameron is she’s enormously talented, funny and athletic,' Tom gushed.

'There’s a lot of trust because she had full flash blanks in the gun as she’s going around [me], they
’re coming past my head and she was always — you have to be there with someone and really know that they’re gonna be there.'

The fourth instalment of the Mission Impossible series is scheduled to hit theatres on December 16, 2011.

The previous three films have brought in a combined $1.4 billion dollars at the international box office.
