Hmm didn't Apple release the 17" MacBook Pro at NAB earlier this year.

Right, the invitation didn't have a bit Aperture logo on it, either. ;)

I am not really crazy about this design. Having to slide the click-wheel down every time I need to use my phone doesn't sound like fun (plus, what would this thing look like open? ...what I'm picturing is ugly).

I was hoping for an iPod Nano form factor with a numerical keypad... nice an simple.

do you dial numbers every time you use your phone? I have a samsung t809, and i don't slide it down most of the time, unless i want to answer it that way. It's kinda fun, but it's not required to answer the phone.

    http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/11/0,,i=118734&,00.jpg

oh yeah, this plays aac's and any song as a ringtone. so that makes ringtone purchases 0.00 if you own the song already... what a concept!

Are we looking into the jaws of the future where you pay, but never OWN anything? Music, Movies, Apps.

You don't own anything you download from the iTunes store now. You hold a license and are allowed to play or view it, but you do not own it.

Who has room for two external displays on a desk that already has a 27" iMac?! Dual outs on the MBP would make much more sense, although achieving it may be more of a technical challenge in terms of GPU power.

ETA: Of course, having an external display connected directly and using the other ThunderBolt port for non-display ThunderBolt devices makes much sense, especially seeing as ThunderBolt devices can't be daisy-chained after a display. So I'm not saying the two ports don't make sense.

Now there's 100GB BDXL. There's plenty of time for Blu-Ray to keep on living on notebooks.

True, but I doubt Apple will put them in their machines and/or peripherals. I'd love to keep a third offsite backup of my information with BDXL, and I can with 3rd party hardware.

I think one of the biggest things holding me back though is the price of the discs.

I hope they bring back the backlit keyboard.

    Same here! 100% same here!

I have been holding back on buying a 13" Air for the backlit keyboard and Thunderbolt.

If I get both it'll be a definite buy. If I get just TB, then I may just consider the MBP.

A shame about scrapping the idea of a ground up design - I hope that doesn't lead to a lack of innovation. That's what really leads Apple along! Although if they just make a killer phone (I'm sure they will at some point...) it's bound to sell buckets loads!

    Uber

This doesn't mean they will just re-brand a phone...it might just mean they are buying transmitters/etc. from other sources rather than engineering their own. Depending on what they buying "off the shelf," this only makes sense...why re-create the wheel?

Of course they may end up just re-branding a phone, but that doesn't really seem like the Apple thing to do.

This is great news! One of the ReadyNAS I didn't buy a Sandy Bridge MBP is that I want USB3.

Maybe Apple still won't include it.

Well, it would surprise me. USB3.0 and Thunderbolt will come included in Intel''s Ivy Bridge. Apple would have to add more hardware and disable USB 3.0 to make it 2.0 only. Makes zero cents.

And that's exactly the reason they would do it. :D

There is no way Apple would deliberately block/not support USB3 on Mac's is there, to force Apple uses to have to buy Thunderbolt only peripherals and not be able to use cheaper USB3 items?

They would never do that would they?

They might, you never know. Stubornness knows no bounds.

The PC industry is plagued with lowest common denominator, low cost crap.

Apple and Intel are trying to move forward. We should support that.

Did you know that an Apple computer is a pc?

No, I mean the lowest repair/return rate of the whole industry, and the highest praise in terms of support and reliability of the whole market...care to take a look around, perhaps?

We all know how public problems with Apple may get...1 PowerBook down is worth 1000 DOA Dells that never make it to the news...or perhaps you think the existence of iFixIt means all Macs are cracked...right? :rolleyes:Fixed!

I have to repair an iBook G3 this week.

Now that it's part of the platform Apple has no excuse for not including it. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see a MBP with this platform that still only has 2.0 connectors.

    And no BluRay. ;)

But then they'd have been hammered with 2 law-suits, and then lost their 2nd biggest customer. Thats financial suicide, Apple would find someone else for parts.
Plus other companies would be less likely to do business with Samsung if they suddenly stopped shipments to a company they had a disagreement with.

I guess there are three types of people in the world:

    1. Someone who only wants one screen hooked to a separate small computer that can only hook to one screen.
    2. Someone who wants a screen married to the computer with the option of adding only one more.
    3. Someone who wants one or more screens hooked to a computer on the floor with room for two dual display video cards.

I have chatted with you, and after originally considering a Mini or iMac, I have ruled out the Mini, and now would either get an iMac or a Mac Pro, however while there is only a $100 difference between (see this thread) what I would get in those 2 machines (and that is before spending more $$ down the road for a 23" ACD), I still feel that the Mac Pro is overkill for me and yet I don't like the iMac AIO, though I would change my mind if it looked like a 23" ACD. The white turns me off. I really only want 1 screen, while I have used 2 I don't really need it. Likewise I like the 30" but have no need for something that big. A 23-24" is perfect for me. I might even wall mount it. And I liked the idea of the Mini, just not the performance. So I find myself saying I will make up my mind soon, but hoping the Mac Pro Jr. shows up before I do. Because I too want to add a second HDD. And I would gladly spend $2,700 - 3,300 for a 2.33 or so Mac Pro Jr, with 2GB RAM 2 250GB HDDs, 256MB VRAM, BT & Airport, BT keyboard & MM, 23" ACD & Applecare after EDU discount.

This is what I've been hoping for. You purchase a "license" and your content is available anywhere on any device. You can download it locally as well, but it's there in the cloud waiting for you. Movies/Music/Games etc. The end to buying on multiple formats, worry about losing/deleting etc. But I'm not sure this model will end up beating out music/movie subscription services.

Spending $4000 for a good Pro isn't worth it compared to $2000 for an iMac.

    True.

But my point is that Steve talked about 30-minute downloads as if to say that this is what your average user can expect.

Absolutely not. He said 30 minutes on a fast connection, pointing out SPECIFICALLY what speed connection is needed for that. If you interpreted it as "average users" will get that speed, you just weren't listening.

If I want to take my iBook on the road with me, then how are the other people in my house going to access the Movies and other media via iTV if it's stored on my iBook or some "external HD" which requires a host computer to be of any use.

How do they check their email when you take the notebook on the road?

I think the major problem with external hardrives, is that iTunes will organises all your content into the Music folder. I just bought a 300GB drive and would love to place all my movies in their, but at the same time I want my music on my Mac (not the external). Apple really needs to address the storage features in iTunes, as movies are large files.

iTunes places content into that folder when you download or rip. But you can put content anywhere, just drag it into iTunes from the new location. I'd like to see them support multiple folders in the future, but you can certainly use content without having it in the folder already.

    Mmmmm....how much?
I get unlimited DVD rentals via post, 3 at a time- latest released.
Add MTR and toast...match that Apple then I'll be interested

I don't think it's realistic to expect apple to match the "deal" you can get from pirating dvd's.

    Ok, here are my predictions.

MacPro - woodcrest (available immediately, all dual duals, 3 levels starting at 2.0 GHz)
    XServe - woodcrest (Available soon)
iMac - Conrow (It is the oldest Intel computer and has received 0 upgrades in 6 months. E6400 in the 17" and E6600 in the 20", we may see a small price decrease)
MacBook Pro - Merom (in 1 Month, Paris intro?)
MacBook - Yonah for now (Merom in about 4 months)
MacMini - Yonah (use existing 1.66 and 1.83 parts)

I would love to see the MacMini get Conroe parts.. it should reduce the cost. Heat may be an issue. The E6300 might work.

I would love to see a small tower, Video Card would be replaceable. Maybe room for a second 3.5" drive. Does SATA have the capability of driving 2 HDs from one controller. It would be similar size to the cube. Pricing about $100 more than the Mini. No expansion slots.

I've got to admit though, I really like my 1.66 GHz Mini. Small, quiet, and fast enough.

    Peace

    Why so many negative votes?

I'm guessing it's because every computer maker has announced the new Core 2 Duo but Apple hasn't.That's why I voted negative.

I feel vindicated in my 60GB 5G purchase a few months back, particularly since I got it on sale. If I can upgrade the software, I'm all chuckles. Besides, I've almost never found the screen brightness an issue.

I do wish I could ultra-boost the audio on-board. Some of the video digitizations I have are too quiet.
