I don't think the shuffles ever had special educational pricing, and I'm not sure the nanos ever did either.

The nanos were all $20 off. I was expecting to get one for $179, looks like $199 now. I bet they bring it back at some point, but I probably won't wait that long.

Is there a software update for the 1G shuffle? I was hoping to see gapless playback and skip count/last skipped. Did I miss it, or did they just not update it? Backward sync doesn't seem to work on the shuffle either. I hope they don't drop support already, they haven't even shipped the 2G yet.

And anyone else not seeing their iPod's playlist in iTunes after the update? The unit still shows up in devices, but I can't actually see the list of what's on it.

Call me crazy, but I would like Apple Computer, Inc. to release a new computer line.

They just released two last week. But let me guess, they didn't release the one you wanted? MBP will get updated in the next week or so.

Can you burn movies to DVD? That is the real question.

And it's been answered a bunch of times. You can back up to DVD, but not burn a dvd that will play in a dvd player.

How does that work? The movies have 640x480 resolution while the iPod has 320x240 screen. iPod specs-page specificly mention that it can play back those movies. So how does it work?

It just displays at a lower resolution. Anyone know if you get 640 via the AV cable to TV?

Why wanna wait for a 300$ iTV half a year when you can have a 24" iMac now?!?!?!?!? And I'm laughing: WIRELESS... but Ethernet Port etc. p.p.... very helpful! No thanks guys, I'm gonna buy the Cinema-iMac!!!

Are you kidding? $1999 for a TV?? And what's so funny about wireless and ethernet? I don't get it.

Yeah, but if Apple want to compete in the media center market, they will have to produce a small box that will do all....ie put HDMI in Mac Mini (iTV could be a cut down version of this??)

The media center market is a dismal failure. And that's because a computer is too expensive for the living room. A few people will use things like minis, but it's impossible to make it cheap enough to be a mainstream solution.

Not everyone agrees, do they? Many Mac "fanatics" prefer Word. This one prefers Pages.

I like Pages for small documents (<20 pages). It has very crisp text display and it is quite nippy in use. The exposed features are quite comprehensive in a single-user environment and the application is quite fun to use. I have yet to try Mellel's word processor however, that is meant to be very good.

It certainly doesn't have the quirks of Word, but it has its own quirks that can be very annoying. For example it wants to be Page Oriented, but then acts like a word processor within each Page, allowing you to have multi-page Pages (that the page template doesn't apply to). WTF?! I admit I didn't get iWork the upgrades didn't seem worthwhile. Hopefully iWork 2007 will be more tempting.

OpenOffice.org and NeoOffice/J are slow clunky embarrassments to open source. AbiWord, Gnumeric, etc, are far nippier (although the former is barely a word processor).

KeyNote is, of course, awesome. However there needs to be a KeyNote viewer application for Windows (and Mac), PowerPoint export isn't ideal, and QuickTime is a bulky tradeoff.

What time do you plan getting there?

I don't know, I was thinking 4am would guarantee a first spot. I don't know what the previous launches looked like.

I do know that 2 weeks after the 3G came out I was waiting in line at 6am on Saturday morning.

The mall opens its doors at 7am and they said the food court doors are opened first.

You could do without the RAID-card altogether and just install 4 drives in the bays in the Mac Pro and use the ZFS filesystem (http://code.google.com/p/maczfs/) to make a dynamic stripe in RAID-Z, so you will get RAID-5 like performance but with better protection and data integrity.

RAID-5 is prone to something called the "RAID-5 write hole" in case of a power outage, something RAID-Z specifically is designed to handle.

Just listing this as another option.

Hmm not really keen on a software based RAID solution on a non officially supported file system for the OSX, after all I want to run some new 6G SSD's off the RAID card too in addition to a RAID5 with 4x UltraStar 6G interface drives, so I would first and foremost benefit from the faster ports on the 6G RAID controller. I might also use the external RAID support/connector on the controller for an external RAID solution. Also surely RAID-Z would take some toll on the RAM and processor too where as with the hardware controller all the processing load will be handled exclusively on the
    controller.

On the topic of photo storage and editing, I ran across this blog post in an app on my iPad called Photoverse. It details how to use star ratings to thin out a shoot without dumping any photos.

Chase Jarvis Photo Editing 101 (http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2011/03/photo-editing-101/)

    Dale

Thanks for sharing this app Dale! I have a lot of research to do! :)

ok 100Teraflops I use a Mac Pro daily for Music and Photography, The Mac Pro is a good beastie but alone it cant do the job, it must be paired up to a good Monitor, IPS panel if possible, I did use apple's but found the Dell's re-produced colour better. When you purchase your DSLR will you shoot RAW or Jpeg, think about it, RAW may be bigger files, but you can keep producing a good quality image from just 1 RAW file, On the subject of a scratch disk try and dedicate a complete disk as scratch.
my MP is set up as follows,
    bay 1 :500gb for OS & apps
bay 2 :320gb as Scratch Disk
    bays 3 & 4 : both have 1tb hdd's in a raid 1 configuration for music and stuff
All my RAW files & Aperture library are on a WD my book studio 4TB edition in a raid 1 via fw800 giving me 2TB to use, The system is simple and it works well. the big hdd's are all green WD drives. Hdd's are cheap now, but get the biggest you can afford (don't buy at the apple store), I find using Raid 1 I spend less time now backing up. The hardest part of photography is deleting images, you may take 100 shots and find only 2 of them are keepers, but getting rid of blurry, out of focus files will free up a lot of space,
you have had some excellent advice on here so far, and it will be nice to hear how you finally set up your workflow, keep us posted :)

Thanks for recommending the specs of a quality monitor. Your Mac Pro HDD configuration is simple and easy to understand. Are you using striping from OS X or did you set you RAID 1 with only two drives? I agree that it is very hard deleting photos, as I do not delete photos after I take them. I wait a few days or longer, and then decide if they are keepers. However, I take photos of my family etc and occasionally automobiles and landscape. Also, you are right that I have received excellent advice from the forum members. You folks rule! :)

I will keep you all posted. I am thinking that I should buy a Mac Pro soon! From what I have read on this forum, a new Mac Pro is not expected until 4Q 2011 or 2012. I do not want to wait that long for a stupid processor chipset. :D A few months is optimal, but 6-8 is not feasible. Thanks again for sharing knowledge and swapping ideas!

    $400-500

    http://www.lowendmac.com/ibook/ig3deals.html

The Airport card is great. The CD-ROM isn't.

Ya, $400-500 seems to be a fair value for the iBook G3 in question.

OMG! That would be awesome - a phone that's a GPS Navigation that you could load where you're going in the phone with relevant picture pointers 'you are now passing MacDonalds on your right handside' and picture flashes up on your phone of the location taken by another user of Googlemaps... while you're driving in the car...

That's way more than I thought the iPhone would be... if it is the iPhone.

If it is then Apple will have pulled another 'miracle of modern technologies' off!

I think this is good thing!

    Macam

You are going to be so disappointed when they announce the phone and you realize that they just released a phone. Yes, the phone is designed by Apple and has a nice UI, maybe one somewhat unique feature, but you're essentially going to be getting a fairly regular phone with a feature that most people would never use often.

I realize that it hasn't been released yet, but the iPhone will never live up to the hype. The number of people who have said they're waiting for it to be released in order to buy it is staggering.......and a bit scary. I wouldn't be waiting for a product when I haven't seen a photo of it, when I haven't seen a features list, a technical specs page, or even a release date. That's crazy.

I think this is what the CDMA iPhone is for and less likely VZW...

I think it's more likely it's for both, it would make no sense for Apple to develop a CDMA iPhone and not give it to Verizon. looking at this list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators) from wikipedia Verizon appears to be the largest CDMA carrier in the world.

Don't underestimate the power of javascript.
I can second that... Most people underestimnate the potential of JavaScript. The software company I have a contract with at the moment writes their whole player software in JavaScript. It is jaw dropping what the guys do with "just" JavaScript!

It is really simple...it doesn't cost $170 and does not involve quite as risky behavior.

It also can't, and won't, unlock iPhones...UltraSn0w is only good up to baseband 5.13.x on 3GS and 1.59.00 on iPhone 4. Particularly for the latter, you only have 2 choices if you have a newer baseband. The SIM interposers (Gevey, Rebel, etc) or this method. I'm inclined to lean to this method as the interposers are rather expensive (Rebel is nearly $80) and can be a PITA. This is pretty seamless and painless, except for the upfront cost.

If they're able to keep this up I expect the price to drop considerably.

I run a business. I send Excel files to customers. I **need** the files to be perfect, no voodoo at all, no weirdness with fonts or file conversion or print area....

Yep - if it works for everyone, it will be a success. iWork is shaping up to be a real challenge to the general publics idea of interoperability.
