The iPhone doesn't offer anything new to an already saturated market. If we wanted to look ahead at developing cell phone technologies, one quick glimpse across the ocean and we'd see it all in Japan. In Tokyo, their phones are their train tickets. One swipe of the cell phone over a reader and you're sorted. Internet and music is old news for them, as it is for most of the world. And a touch screen? Now there's a problem waiting to happen.
You've never used a smartphone have you? my P910 had a physical flip keyboard/number pad, and i removed it (removal is a standard feature of the p910) and just use the touch screen for the last 6 or so months. never been happier. screw a physical button that gets worn and doesnt show you the number any more.
You could say the PC market is saturated by Windows, and the Server market is saturated by Dell/HP/IBM/Sun and Microsoft/Linux, but they still operate in both markets sucessfully. the iPod is proof that they can produce lifestyle devices that people just want, regardless of their computer.

My Macbook is now 10 degrees C warmer, and I can really feel the difference. A subtle whine is coming from the top left side of the computer as well. I can't see how this would be an upgrade to anything when everything was better before the update.

The difference compared to the old one is to small. I assume that many iMac users with an iMac 2007/2008/2009/2010 don't buy a new one.
I assume you're reading the chart wrong. The new i5 is faster than the old i7, even though the i7 has hyperthreading but the i5 doesn't. That's pretty huge. It doesn't look like the new i7 has been benchmarked yet.
The processor upgrade in the new 27 inch line is just a marginal upgrade from the 27 inch core i7 2.93ghz 11,3 generation.
Based on what? Are there benchmarks out for the new i7 yet?
I do agree with you that it doesn't make sense for most people to upgrade from the previous generation, but I tend to feel that way about sequential updates in general. But this does look like it has the potential to be a nice improvement, and I think the TB ports allow the new machines to compete with the MPs in some ways they never have before.

So you could theoretically build and conceal tracking stations all over the place and thus monitor these short-range transmissions. Wouldn't it be simpler just to hide cameras all over?

t on the display... You must've gotten a crappy front panel. I've had several. All had 0 display issues.

With a black bezel, the whitest point of the screen looks like white to your eyes.
With a white bezel, the bezel is the whitest, so white on the LCD never looks white. it usually looks blue or yellow.

i have a huge doubt that it's going to be used on a mac. apple did it so other companies won't profit from creating an invention like that. sorta like: "ours idea first, you can't do it"
if it's used, however unlikely it is, I will gladly welcome it. i mean, you can put a piano keyboard, scratchboard, numberpad, touchscreen, flight-simulator joysticks, calculators, thumbprint verification, customizable palm-rest, etc.

I'm a cingluar customer. My contract is up in January. If Apple does release a phone with T-Mobile, I'd switch. Not for the phone, but for Catherine Zeta-Jones. :p

The reason these rumors keep circulating is because Apple is months behind on the development of this product. They originally intended for it to come out around April 2006 but a redesign forced them to go back to the drawing board.
Nobody in their right mind would take a look at the pathetic 5.5th generation "upgrade" and think that was what Apple had planned all along.

Yeah, I had an idea of it in my head, but you cleared it up, thanks. I guess I got confused at the part where I said that UMTS is TDMA based when really it's actually just intended for GSM networks, correct? And yeah, it bothers me, too, that IS-95 is not used more often.
CDMA is owned by Qualcomm so everytime someone makes a cdma compliant handset qualcomm gets a portion of the profit. WCDM/UMTS is not owned by Qualcomm so more profits for the handset makers. Profit usually wins out over quality.

Agreed. Sony had the vaio x that was partially made out of carbon fiber, 11" 1.5 lb. The 11" MBA is 2.3. If Apple wants to cut on weight, liquid metal is the way, especially since they are the only one who can use it in consumer electronics. The thing has a yield strength 25 times higher than aluminium :eek: . Injectable and recyclable. Price will be the main factor for liquidmetal, it's made primarily of zirconium, which isn't cheap.
Not cheap for most but knowing apple they can create the demand that will push the price down just look at screens. also they do have a good price point where they are not competing for the bottom of the barrel prices so I can see them making it work. :rolleyes:

LCD: What a terrible looking display - back light bleeding not so much as terrible diffusion / light scatter - you can clearly see the LEDs themselves - bleeding I usually associate with a spot or two from poor extinction ratios - but that thing is... ack. As for the white balance bit with a white surround, I've yet to notice this effect while using any of my white iMacs, and have not seen it on the white Macbooks...

I sometimes walk out in the snow without a jacket or a sweater, just a T-shirt. I would feel the cold pressing against my skin, not as cold, but as an unusual sensation. It's funny. When I changed my pain threshold in my mind, I was able to cope with the cold weather pretty easily.
I'm sure this could be applied to child birth.

Apple seems to propose that you take a �blank� iPod and add a wheel for a standard iPod, add a keypad to make it a phone - add a joystick to make it a game machine. The overlays are identified by the computer/device and it reacts accordingly. Imagine adding a nice volume control to your iPod. The �blank� iPod can be made into a PDA, cell phone, game machine, handtop or remote control.

Presumably, this would allow third-party vendors to design their on interfaces for the iPod/MacBook- this would make an extremely versatile machine. Examples mention by Apple include surfaces to make your MacBook a music/video editing machine or even overlays allowing you to add two buttons to your MacBooks touchpad.
