As usual American's (yeah I'm American) love to blame someone for their own responsibility. It's so weird how people on here fight for freedom from the lockdowns that Apple puts on it's developers, freedoms from the limitations and restrictions Apple puts on the iPhone (hence why people jailbreak). Yet when a parent doesn't take accountability for their absence of judgement and legal obligation to be responsible for their child, everyone goes off on Apple for not having the protections in place to prevent this?

There are so many hypocrites in this country, probably because nobody wants to take accountability for their own actions. What if it were a gun. If the parent left it on the night stand with a bullet in it, and the kid picked it up and shot & killed someone, would you all be blaming the maker of the gun? No, you'd be going after the parents for failure to supervise their kid which led to actions causing someone's death.

So why is it different here?

    IT'S NOT.

I always love to bring that up at those Mcdonalds debates.

This is fantastic - you've captured a mysterious feeling here.

Took my camera out yesterday for the first time in about four months: a bit like getting back in a car when you haven't driven for a while, to find you're thinking about something you used to do automatically...

Looks like you've still got it ... welcome back!

Great nature shot here - exciting!

this is where boris and the clan are plotting how we can all pay for the olympics with parking tickets

aka the "giant testicle" (the building, not Boris).

I am so jealous. Love some of the places people in the UK shoot at.

Man, some of the people here are jealous of the, uh, "scenery" that you get to shoot.

I know it is rather (ok, very) cliche to post a duck shot ;)

No, it is an honourable tradition here ...

they deserved it. if the kid is stupid enough to look at a 1000 dollar app and hit download he shouldnt get a refund. hey i just put a gas hose in my car, i didnt expect gas to come out and i had to pay. any how why would the mother give a 11 year old access to her credit card? dumb move. she deserved it too. she could type the pass for him or give him a blank account and buy gift cards for him.

Since when did HP become the number 1? I've not heard anything, do you have an article or something that I could possibly read?
The Gartner report released yesterday had Dell and HP virtually tied for first place with 17.2% market share each (HP ever so slightly higher) and the IDC one had HP 300k units (or 0.2%) ahead.

Dell are still #1 in the USA, but even there the gap narrowed, from Dell having a 2.2 million unit lead in the previous quarter to a 1.5 million unit lead in the quarter just ended.

HP are really leaping ahead. I expect they will take the US #1 spot back from Dell sometime next year.

I think Matte would be good, but you can just go buy a film and apply it quite easily so thats not a show stopper for me, however I have read it can lose some clarity so a factory applied option would be better.

And now you have two additional layers for light from the display to pass through — the arbitrary sheet of glass AND the diffusing film. It's not a real solution.

If I had to guess, I'd say there are three likely reasons Apple went all out gloss:

    1. Impressive in-store displays. Colours look punchier when compared to a matte display, and that appeals to many buyers evidently.

    2. The new black-bordered aesthetics made popular by the iPhone, iPod touch and now the iPad. This gives Apple's modern product line a look of consistency. Again, it's about appearances, not practicalities.

    3. So they can talk about recyclable materials like aluminium and yep… glass. But again, it's all about appearances. Anyone really serious about sustainable living knows that the first, and arguably most important, of the three R's is REDUCE. The glass may be essential on a touch screen device, but it is completely unnecessary on a desktop or laptop display.

Furthermore, I have issues with the comments about marketshare increase alone as a primary contributor to getting Macs back into schools. The reason I have a problem with that is that school boards and school superintendants are typically in the back pocket of the IT staffs of the district, and so many of those staffs out there are all MS-heads. Until you can replace those folks (not convert, not convince, but replace) you're hardly likely to see much penetration into the educational market.
I'm the techie guy at an elementary school and 99.9% of all the computers in the district (not just my school, the entire district) are Macs. The last director of technology was really pro-Mac, along w/ a lot of the other schools' techies, which was a good thing. However, the kindergarten teacher @ my school has some peecees which she got on a grant to run some Windows only software (but didn't get them set-up since, according to the last director of technology, didn't fit into the district's technology plans). Also, each techie is getting a MacBook w/ dual boot because we're going to a new program that rates how well the kids to in reading & math where you can see the progress online, but the only way you can upload the results is on Windows. Boo!!! That's one reason why Macs still have low marketshare: no programs. It's a chicken & the egg problem. Mac marketshare won't go significantly up until more software is ported, but not very much software will be ported until mac marketshare is up.

One problem with increased market share is that there will be more attacks on them. One of the Mac's sources of security is security through obscurity. So, why go after an OS that only has 5% marketshare while another OS has 90%? I don't know whether Windows or Macs are more secure in terms of actual bugs and security holes, but we probably would if Windows & Macs get equal marketshare.

There are two main reasons that I know of to hack into computers, write viruses, or something: (1) to gain entry to a computer to get files, damage the company's infrastructure or (2) to be a jackass. The first one is probably for personal gain and Macs may be a target, the second to make yourself feel good at other people's expense and would probably be Windows-based to inflict the most damage. Anyone want to add something, be my guest.

If the new AIR is using the same Sandy Bridge processor as the Samsung series 9, you'll be sorely disappointed with its graphics performance.

    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/samsung-series-9.aspx?page=3

3DMark is less than half of the Air (2188 vs 4611)

WOW ran at a miserable 14fps at 1366x768 res compared to the Air that runs at 53fps at 1440x900. Battery life is worse as well.

We knew all this Graphics stuff already like a month ago from the Engadget review.

They said the Series 9 gets 25 mins less battery life (http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/samsung-series-9-900x-laptop-review/).

PCMag says the Series 9 gets almost an hour MORE battery life (http://www.pcmag.com/image_popup/0,1740,iid=291739,00.asp). These reviews are all over the place, and only tell part of the story.

Yes, the graphics (aka Gaming) performance will be less. But it seems on par or better than the 9400m, which people use just fine every day in the 2008/2009 MBA/MB/MBP's.

And regarding Battery life - we have no idea what Voodoo Apple puts into the power optimization of it's laptops.

All we can empirically say at this point is that the (U)LV i5/i7 chips with IGP consume about 21W TDP, which is less than the SL9400/9600+320m combo which some have pegged at over 30W TDP. The laws of physics seem to dictate that since it draws up to 10W less power and would (presumably) have the same battery, a SB MBA would have more battery life than a C2D MBA.

You are absolutely right about her having some sort of mental dysfunction. Furthermore, she has defied logic and shows flawed reasoning or the inability to reason at all. She is opposing the norm of society, the ability to stay healthy, and the ability to have a better quality of life. With today's knowledge on obesity, she realizes she is running towards death, and runs to it with arms wide open.

People in good physical shape with a good diet, as you noted, do not always have better health outcomes, but statistically speaking, people with a healthy BMI and a good diet almost always have better health outcomes. Arthritis prevalence and severity is a major issue for people who are class 3 (formally morbidly) obese. Obesity is one of the top risk factors for death and is the top risk factor for about 7 different deadly and/or debilitating chronic diseases.

I would argue that accepting a lifestyle that has a much higher likelihood of illness or death doesn't necessarily mean mental illness. What about adventure seekers? Is climbing Everest a sign of mental illness? The likelihood of dying is high, and honestly, some would say that you have to be crazy to do it, but people still praise the behavior, and don't label the person with a mental illness.

Guys, it really is possible that she just LOVES food. I've met people like that. They are great chefs and are very over weight because they love food. Not because they have some kind of mental deficiency.

    Where are these figures?

The first, third, and fifth are units while the second, forth and sixth are revenue.

The first two are the last quarter, second two the year ago quarter, and third two are this quarter.

I've got a question for you guys. Any of you Mac users that also run Windows on a box somewhere:

Are any of you really going to upgrade to Vista when it comes out? or are you going to wait at least a year?

I run Windows on several computers at home and use one at work. Supporting all types of computers is my line of work so I can't avoid it. I use my Mac to accomplish anything where I want reliable, predictable results though especially when it comes to video and graphics.

I NEVER upgrade any of my personal computers to the latest Windows products until several months have passed. I have to install the product at work primarily to evaluate when it's ready to deploy.

I used Windows 2000 until service pack 1 on XP came out and will probably do the same thing for Vista. Microsoft basically has to stop supporting a version of their OS before I feel compelled to upgrade though. It's only been about 6 months where the lack of updates on Windows 2000 has been a concern to me.

Whatever dude. 2Ghz2GB RAM256MB Video160GB HD and there is NOTHING instantaneous about Parallels at all. It takes anywhere from 1-2 minutes to resume a session and another 2+ minutes to suspend it. This is with multiple images, several OS X installs, and I know how to tweak Windows with the best of them.

Sounds like you're not talking about Parallels starting up, but a virtual machine either resuming or starting up from scratch. For me WinXP starts in about 15 seconds on a 2.16Ghz 2GB RAM or about 2 minutes if resuming. But that has NOTHING to do with Cocoa, QT, Carbon or what not. The difference between those frameworks in speed is in milliseconds and would have nothing to do with the above. Those would have everything to do with file writing to disk.

I can say that when Parallels has its VM Flags set to VM Cache as the primary caching logic, its disk speed is near native, but OS X apps slow down dramatically. Change that to Mac OS X primary caching logic and the VM's disk access slows down noticeably, but not horribly.
