True...and Apple can do as they wish. But sooner or later their high priced Mac line will have to drop a bit in price if they wish to attract the "I ain't paying more than $900 for a bleeping computer" crowd. :)
Why?
They've held this strategy for over two decades and the only time they were in trouble, financially, was when they abandoned it.
Methinks you know tech a whole lot better than you do how to run a business.

i don't consider myself quite retarded enough to warrant replacing them.
I don't need them either but I'm goin to use the old straps as lanyard thingies.

5. Who is the other admin of Macrumors?
I thought that arn was the only administrator. This if the first time that I have heard of this subject. I will admit that I don't know any of the answers. Could someone PM the answer to #5?

I can connect to our intranet site via hostname (e.g. xyz.local/index.html) when I am on the LAN because (as I understand it) .local hostnames are advertised by the bonjour service. But this does not work over a VPN (becuase no bonjour services do) so I have to connect by IP address (e.g. 192.168.2.11/index.html)
Is there an alternative to using the bonjour advertised hostnames that doesn't involve connecting by IP address? Would having a local DNS server running on the server or router (Vigor 2820) be a solution?
I realise I could edit the hosts file of every computer/device that connects via the VPN but I was after a more universal solution that can be implemented at the server end.

So you cant really touch the front of this thing coz it will do something...... I cant really put it in my pocket, especially if the hold button isnt physical...
That's exactly why I decided not to buy the Chocolate...
The buttons were just too sensitive. I was hitting pause and play, pause and play, and I didn't even notice I was hitting any buttons...:(

I don't know how the Order Status page on Apple's site works in other countries, but in the US if the item ships separately, there's a separate tracking number with each item, otherwise it will say "preparing for shipping or "not yet shipped".
I would think calling Apple would probably provide more answers than calling the shipping company.
I called Apple and TNT to let them know, now they are calling each other :)
I clearly have one tracking number for both items, yet when tracking this number on TNT UK site, I get 2 items, one being delivered.
I guess I should get my iMac tomorrow, but I will still keep on Apple and TNT back till then. The whole thing is weird, I bought many computers from Apple Online Store and never had such issues.

I'll be there eventually. I'll let you know what the line is like if I beat you there. I planning on 3:30 or so.
Let me know if you get there earlier.
Just got a report from someone I know that drove past there -- 4 people in line at the moment. Or at least that was 15 mins ago.
Going to grab a bite to eat and leave here shortly.

Wow! NeoOffice loses it at line 20. Even with parentheses like this: '=(A1*6)-1'
Try with =ROUND(A1;1)*6-1 and the problem is gone. ;)

Let's hope that's the case! My iPad 2 is a paperweight without jailbreak :)
I agree, I switched to Android from iPhone on my phone... love Android's customizability on their phones... they're better... but Apple's tablet is better** (when Jailbroken) than Xoom... so need JB immediately to make iPad usable :-)

I am just trying to wrap my head around why if I would have 2x SSD's (one with Win7, the other OSX) connected to the Areca controller in pass through mode (not raid) would I not be able to select the drive to boot from upon startup or in the worst case from within OSX through the startup disk utility?
OK.
Well, first off, you cannot have both OS's on the RAID card. OS X would boot from the card, but Windows will not. This is why the Windows disk must be attached to the ICH (it's been tried unsuccessfully with multiple cards from different brands).
But with this configuration, you will be able to use the Boot Loader built into the MP's firmware to select which OS you want to boot (still have to set the OS X boot disk under System Preferences). Windows is done during the installation process (you select the disk location, and that gets set in the Boot Loader).
Take a look at Apple's Boot Camp page (http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/) for further information (How To Guide).
Or say if I have one SSD connected to the backplane SATA2 ports via backplane cable and the other to the Areca controller in pass through mode, what methods will be available to me for switching between the operating system I wish to boot from ? e.g. Can I call up a boot menu holding the option key during startup and select to boot from the SSD with Windows 7 or must I first log into OSX, open startup disk utility and select the SSD with Win 7 as the drive to startup from next time? or is this managed through bootcamp?
Assuming you mean to use the ICH for the Windows disk (backplane connector that's meant for the empty ODD bay), see above.
To access the Boot Loader Menu, hold down the Option key during startup (brings up the installed OS's), and select which one you want to use.
As for mounting the two SSD's and connecting power to them what is your opinion on the MaxUpgrade kits like the below, they don't have any pics etc. Do their power cables take power from the backplane cable and splice off into multiple SATA power? if so do you think there is data cable to connect the one SSD to onboard sata2:
MaxConnect for Mac Pro [2009-2010] Models
Disk Drive Mount (CNC Machined Aluminum) for the Four 2.5 inch SATA drives in the Optical Bay
iPass /MiniSAS Cable from the PCIe Controller to the Optical Bay 1 meter - to the Areca
Power Cables for the Four 2.5 inch SATA Drives
Mac Pro's with Third Party RAID Cards (with MiniSAS Connector)
The kit includes a means of getting power to the disks (connects to the connector on the backplane board, where the drives normally connect to ). So you get up to 4 of these (part of why you need to pay attention to the part number you order from MaxUpgrades).
It's meant to get up to 4x HDD's attached to a 3rd party RAID card (includes all the parts needed to do this, such as cables and custom trays that are shallower in order for the cables to fit).
In short, it will do what you need (has been used successfully many times). Just make sure you order the right part (both system's model year as well as the disk count - it's not hard, but do pay attention or you may get the wrong one).
Is the battery backup module T113 worth getting for
the Areca 1880 to protect against power failure or is it not that vital
if one has a good UPS? I suppose an UPS does not protect against
internal PC failures, accidental shut downs etc. But the Mac Pro
seems to be a reliable machine.
Ideally, run both. So if the budget allows for it, get it.
BTW, make sure the UPS uses a pure sine wave inverter, not a stepped unit (i.e. SmartUPS series from APC). There are another type beginning to ship (PWM based steps = more of them, so it better approximates a sine wave). But for about the same cost, you can get a true sine wave unit in the refurbished market if you look.

No problems
So I assume it will just stop recharging during the extended time.
Can it wear down the battery over time? I never forget. Just this one time :p

That blinking amber light (steady power light, yes?) means there is a cartridge error.
You said you replaced the ink cartridges, by that I guess you mean the ink tanks? Do you have a spare cartridge (tank holder and print head assembly) to test? I have the same problem with my 2500, and I have a vague idea that I once had two cartridges, but where the second one went is beyond me.

The G3 slot-load iMacs used 8x/4x/24x CD-RW drives.
My G3 iMac had a similar problem with a spindle of no-name discs. The first attempt to burn always failed, but if I inserted the disc a second time, it worked. Try burning to the same disc again.

^to the above posts, thanks for the offers but I really don't care for celeron too much either, and the T61 would be way over my budget.
Thanks for all of the replys & PMs, I have found a Powerbook g4 from a forum member and I purchased an IBM T40 on ebay.

I'm selling my almost brand new iCurve due to lack of use. It is in PERFECT condition, it's only about 3 months old. It will come in the original box with all the original paperwork! It will ship from PA. I will accept PayPal or Money Orders. I have done other transactions before, so feedback can be provided. I also have alot of other things for sale i.e. Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse, a 30GB iPod Photo with dock, Agent 18 Clickshield, a Black ShowCase, and a 15" 1.5Ghz Powerbook. If someone is interested in multiple things, I will provide a discount. With the holidays coming, I figure it's time to clear some stuff out!! I'm asking $32 Shipped for the iCurve. I will ship worldwide but buyer pays extra shipping.

I scanned in class notes into a pdf file. I then arranged the PDFs in the order I wanted using Preview. Now I can't seem to save the whole thing as one big file, so I can view it on my ipad.
When I click File, the option it gives me is "save as" and will only save that one pdf slide to my desktop.
I need help, I just spent 5 hours doing all this, with well over 600 pages.
thanks in advance

I bought iWork '05 instead of Office X, and it can't compare. Word is just an easier, more powerful word processor to use. I prefer keynote to powerpoint, but not by much. I would definetely rate word higher than pages, and office higher than iwork. Powerpoint is definetely usable, but use mail+address book+iCal instead of entourage (way better).

i really doubt that people will be camping out front of the cap hill overnight. last year i showed up around 7 or so, and was like 6th in line. i know that this is at 8am instead of 5pm, but still - people are gonna wanna get up around the same time, in my opinion.
