Dowdy: Katie's outfit of unflattering cardigan, trousers and boots was far removed from her usual stylish chic

We're used to seeing Katie Holmes looking stylish, even on a simple shopping trip - but even celebrities have their off days.

And the actress appeared to be having one when she treated her 18-year-old step-daughter Isabella and a friend to lunch in Vancouver on Monday.

Katie, 32, looked frumpy in an unflattering beige cardigan, blue trousers and boots as she and Isabella went to the vegan restaurant Gorilla Food.

And she wasn't helped by the fact that her hair, tied up in a messy bun on top of her head, looked in need of washing, and her face appeared make-up free.

Isabella, by contrast, looked casual but cool in a khaki jacket, jeans, flat pumps and a blue woollen hat.

It was a far cry from the smart casual outfits that Katie has been seen in while she, Isabella and her daughter Suri spend time in the Canadian city.

She is there with the family while husband Tom Cruise films MIssion Impossible: Ghost Protocol, set for release later this year.

Isabella - who was adopted by Cruise when he was married to Nicole Kidman - is rarely seen out in public, but has been coming out of her shell during her time in Canada.

Katie - who comes across as being a down-to-earth stepmother to the teenager - has been including her in outings with four-year-old daughter Suri, and the trio were all seen enjoying a drink at Starbucks last week during a shopping trip in the city.

She has admitted in the past that she enjoys a close relationship with Isabella and Tom's adopted son Connor.

Bare-faced: Katie also appeared to be make-up free for her outing with Isabella

The pair were adopted by Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman, and home-schooled in California. With the break-up of her parents ten-year marriage in 2001 she and Connor chose to stay with their father, while he went onto marry again.

Katie revealed in an interview three years ago that both Isabella and Connor called her 'Mom' after she had been in their lives just two years.

'His first two children are incredible, really smart and kind,' she said. 'They call me Mom.'
