As much as I wish it would happen, I doubt Apple has fully internalized that the glossy glass screens were a horrendous design decision. I bet is it'll be two more years until they will be forever phased out, along with the enormous black bezels on the majority of products. But Apple is typically slow in realizing their mistakes, no surprise given their successes.

Point well taken. You're probably right but i'm still hoping that they at least cut down that huge bezel. Also I would hope that they make that SSD standard.

Been wanting a new TV for a while

DUDE! Was that online or in store? I will go buy one today if they have them at my store. Been wanting a tv as well. Do you like it? Is 40" good for gaming and hooking a laptop up to?

Picked this up at Georgetown University's bookstore today, they had it beside the new models and it was marked down to $27 brand new.

Maybe what we really need is a display that can rotate 90 and still look good. Then I could stick a pair of 9:16's side by side.

Hey now, I think you are onto something....That sounds like a new feature that MAC would offer, similar to how the iPod/iPad flip sideways....Excellent insight!!!

Dell is DEAD. HP is DEAD. Apple RULES!
Dell is losing out in all directions, but HP? They just became the #1 worldwide PC manufacturer again after increasing sales 6%. Dell meanwhile lost 6% last quarter.

I know a loss of 6% and a gain of 6% aren't the same numbers unless you start at a common baseline, but it doesn't take a genius to work out where most of Dell's lost sales went.

I think it'd be awesome to organize an Orange County iPhone 5 run. When the time comes, post the thread, and we'll figure something out.

    I'll be there!

The iPad 2 is really awesome - a HUGE difference between the first and second - it's worth the wait!

Again - getting there at 6 AM should do you plenty good

No one.. and stangely it's now ON by DEFAULT in all the MacTels I've received lately. No idea why.

I do, and so does anyone who has a classic environment of System 7 and earlier for classic compatibility reasons.

Granted you can use TCP/IP on some of these, however the reliability of such extensions on early versions of Classic leaves much to be desired. I however turn off Appletalk when I am away from my home network.

Just been on a business trip to Florida and stayed at a hotel in West Palm Beach. The car park and surrounding area were planted with these trees. I think they're banyan trees, a type of fig. Can anyone confirm or otherwise? At night it was lovely to stroll outside and listen to the insects chirping. The lights in the car park lit the trees from underneath giving them a very LOTR look! We were taking a big exhibition with us and everything was just on the limit weight-wise so I daren't even take a monopod, it was so close, so the camera was hand
held for this photo. It's not sharp enough to enlarge but wanted to share the look of the place!

    http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/8266/banyan.jpg

Looks like a Strangler Fig. There is interesting info in the Wiki link below.

If it's taking you two minutes to resume a session and two minutes plus to suspend it, on that machine you mentioned the specs of, something is frickin' wrong with that machine.

2.16 Core 2 Duo 20" iMac here, 2GB, stock 250GB drive, Parallels does the following:

    - it cold starts in 4 seconds
    - it boots my XP VM (512MB of RAM/8GB virtual hard disk) to the Desktop in 9
    - it suspended that same XP VM in 14
    - it restored that same XP VM in 11

And that's with Crossover for Mac running several Windows apps in the background too, so some of my resources are already drained when I fired up Parallels and the VM. Memory usage at the moment for the entire machine is sitting at 1154MB of 2048MB, 69 tasks, 330 threads as measured by MenuMeters.

So, give that box a tuneup or whatever, because you're certainly not getting the performance from Parallels that you should be getting. Also, check your VT-x flags under Parallels to make sure it's functioning properly.

btw, this is Parallels build 1970, the latest and greatest, and I've had nothing but positive usage of Parallels since I bought it off the shelf in an Apple Store along with this iMac a month ago. 3 upgrades so far, no issues at all.

    bb

I get similar performance on my slighly slower iMac.... And my VM images are on a less than ideal external FW drive!!! I'll second the opinion that if your system is significatly slower than this with Parallels, there's something VERY wrong with your Mac...

For all of those people who are saying "Once it adds X I can finally remove MS from my computer..." have you not considered Open Office? I find its actually better than MS Word in many respects and being open source its totaly free.

A year ago I would of said Apple would never package iWork free with Macs, but the more I see that iWork is hardly setting the world alight the more I think it probably would be a better business model to package it with systems. Im sure they will offset the cost with selling more Macs in the first place but more importantly getting people hooked into buying the update each year ala iLife.

They're still using this piece of marketing on the iMac page:

The iMac display looks great from any seat in the house, thanks to a premium display technology called in-plane switching (IPS). IPS gives you a bright picture with excellent color — even if you’re viewing the display from the side.

EDIT: Lots of people beat me; irrelevant post.

Since I couldn't find it posted yet: not only does the 15" model come with 1 GB standard now, it's also in an 'upgrade friendly' way: 1 x 1 GB instead of 2 x 512. So, if you want to upgrade your memory later, you can do it fully and are not stuck with an extra module.

And what exactly do you plan to run on that extra horsepower? What effect does it have on battery power.

Congratulations on being caught up with the sheep in the new CPU clock speed race.

WHAT? Can't I send texts twice as fast? Check my Facebook page more often with a dual core?

Hello broken bones and doctor bills:D

He's probably under 20 ... bones don't break that easy they bend still. Also they think their indestructible! You remember those times right?! ;)

That is a SERIOUS board. I'm from the old school of Schmidt Stixx and Powell & Peralta. I'm looking for a board with totem poles on either side of a temple. I'm unsure which of those companies made them Stixx or Peralta but its
hasn't been in production since 87. if anybody knows and can find the name/picture it would be helpful (Yes these where the days when the young adult Tony Hawk ripped the scene just prior to showing that the 720 was possible and doable with STYLE).

    My wish list:

    1) Have my current job past February 2011 - was granted I'm here until May 2012. OT is looking up and a raise. I can NOW finally invest and debt is getting paid and lower :D .

    2) I'd LOVE to have a 13" MBP with a Core i5 and equal or better than 310/310M Nvidia that is current. My Al_MB is pushing hard in Logic Pro 9.0.1.

    3. and most important wish:

1 WEEK during this Xmas holiday's ... to have
    a) EVERY poor child under 19 fed healthy and hearty!
    b) Every homeless person to have above and a warm & safe shelter and shower, a swap for smelly clothes! I HATE having to not go into a store or shun them on the subway because they SMELL so bad. They ARE still human beings and nobody is above them. Sure most made STUPID decisions to end up that way, or life was harsh all at once and no recourse to be a bum. I STILL remember not too long ago I lived in a shelter for 1.5yrs had nothing more than 3 days of clothes no job and no money. I stole for used clothes only and ate when I could BUT I worked my ASS off to get the ********* job and go back to school. MANY of you that have wealth take things for granted and within just a few days can loose it all. BUMS have one thing going for them ... either they don't know HOW or just self respect society NOT to attempt robbing a bank. if successful they can clean up - if not then at least food and shelter is gauranteed, even some basic health needs are covered - but it puts a strain on our taxes.
    c) FAMINE to be put to a ground STOP in ALL the world just for a week.

#3 is an important wish to my heart - I have no resources to do it myself, no energy to convince those with cash that its important and unfortunately hard to trust those doing it actually can have a life doing this for a few years and NOT get paid; yet enjoy travelling to so many countries. HOW the HELL does RICE solve hunger and provide nutritional value to those with bloated bellies and starving for months/!?!?!?!

I don't care what anyone says, even "Microsoft". Until an amendment is apply to the licensee agreement, I'm going to use it the way it is stated. I'm not going to install the software in a virtual machine on the licensed device.

My guess is the licensee, either is correct as written, or they will release a new agreement when the actual product ships. If MS intends for thier software not to be installed in a VM, they will clarify in the license agreement.

Very nice update... solid machines. I bought my MBP 17" 3 months ago, so I think I'll wait for OS 10.5 next year, and hopefully the next revision of these babies until I upgrade... though it *is* tempting right now.

The Gartner report released yesterday had Dell and HP virtually tied for first place with 17.2% market share each (HP ever so slightly higher) and the IDC one had HP 300k units (or 0.2%) ahead.

Dell are still #1 in the USA, but even there the gap narrowed, from Dell having a 2.2 million unit lead in the previous quarter to a 1.5 million unit lead in the quarter just ended.

HP are really leaping ahead. I expect they will take the US #1 spot back from Dell sometime next year.

Oh my... Showing signs of a dying Dell... Apple is looking good at the moment though.

If Apple grabs even 10% of the Market, I reckon we will see a lot more software ported to OSX (namely games).

I'm porting all my code over to OSX, so will be on of those converts.

Charming photo. You've clearly built a rapport with the subject.

OK, here's mine for today. This was taken with iPhone using the Hipstamatic app. It was taken on the cliffs just north of Bude, in Cornwall, this past weekend. Some on this board may consider this "gimmicky", especially with the "aged" look of the framing, but I think this one worked pretty well. I would appreciate any c&c; on this.
