Acting up: Russell Brand and Helen Mirren put on an amusing display on the red carpet for the premiere of their new film The Tempest in New York last night

He plays the jester in the film.

So fittingly Russell Brand ensured his red carpet performance for the premiere of The Tempest was equally jovial.

The comedian-turned-actor put on a flirty display with co-star Helen Mirren, before taking one a camera off one of the assembled photographers.

Flirty: The pair were at the New York Film Festival and star in the film together, adapted from the William Shakespeare play

Russell started taking pictures, holding the camera to his crotch and pulling a series of funny faces at the New York event last night.

Clearly he was in a better mood than on his recent trip through LAX Los Angeles Airport when he allegedly assaulted a photographer.

His fiancee Katy Perry stood by his actions, saying he was defending her honour after the snapper apparently tried to take a picture up her skirt.

Can I borrow that: Russell takes hold of a camera from on of the photographers and begins shooting some frames

Joker: He plays a jester in the movie so it was only appropriate that the star put on a jovial performance on the red carpet

But last night, Russell was on form as he took to the red carpet at The New York Film Festival.

Mirren plays Prospera in the movie, adapted from the Shakespeare play, while Felicity Jones stars as her daughter, Miranda, and Brand takes on the role of jester Trinculo.

Speaking on the red carpet, Mirren, who has just finished film the Arthur remake with Brand, said: 'The adaptation is free and classical and not too radically experimental.

Mr cameraman: Russell recently got involved in an alleged fight with a photographer, but seemed in better spirits at last night's event

In the comedy drama Prospera's throne is usurped by her brother, and she is sent off on a ship with her four-year-old daughter.

They find themselves stranded on an island devoid of society. A power struggle develops between Caliban (Djimon Hounsou ) and Prospera due to her efforts to become a father figure to Miranda.

The film originally premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

Budding actress: Felicity Jones also stars in the film, playing the daughter of Mirren's character
